Seiko “Spider Web” SAGN006 GMT Brightz
Model: Seiko “Spider Web” SAGN006 GMT Brightz Year: 2003 Limited Edition: 300 Pieces Features: The Origin. Released in 2003, and limited to just 300 pieces, the SAGN006 is packed full of oddball choices that make it impressively distinct - not just the rest of the Brightz catalogue, but from other Seikos too. The Design. A two-tone colourway is always a delight, but the SAGN006 wasn’t simply presented to us in yellow gold and steel. Instead, we’ve been treated to rose gold and titanium. Not only that, but the sharp angles, brushed flanks, and polished edges result in a stunning cushion case. The Dial. The ivory and rose gold accented dial is elegantly composed, with raised and recessed subdials - as well as some attention-grabbing sword hands - but the real star of the show is the central spider web motif. This isn’t something I’ve seen Seiko use before or since, although the recent Ginza Cobblestone dials have similar, but unrelated, energy. But the SAGN006 is far more than just a pretty face. The Movement. At the time of its release, the 4S27 was one of the most complicated automatic movements ever produced by Seiko. The Hi-Beat 28,800bph calibre also has 50 hours of power reserve, retrograde day, circular date pointer, as well as a 24-hour subdial with an independently adjustable hour hand. The Legacy. Having handled almost every Brightz from that era, I don’t think its connection to Credor stops with shared parts. Much like Credor, it had a surprisingly ambitious scope when compared to other Seikos from the era - and a price tag to match, costing almost $2,100 in 2003 (not adjusted for inflation). Sadly, Brightz didn’t have the strength to continue at that level forever. Today’s collection bears little resemblance to its former self - but we’ll always have this era by which to remember it.
