A bench is long and shallow. Four, five or six feet wide, and often under two feet deep. So the cover has to fit those proportions rather than a box. Benches vary by maker and so do the covers, so one seller's two-seater cover swallows a three-seater bench while another's comes up short on the two-seater it was named for. Too long, and the surplus folds over at one end and traps water in the fold. Too short, and the rain gets underneath and onto the seat. Either way there is slack, and slack is what the wind takes. Which is how a brand-new cover ends up pinned down with a brick and an offcut of timber, like the one in the photo. A back makes it worse. Look at the photo and ask where the water goes after one light shower. Down the back, into the dip where the cover has sagged onto the seat, and there it stays, a puddle pressing on the fabric until it finds a way through. What Does a Garden Bench Cover Protect Against? Six things damage a garden bench across the year: rain, damp, sun, wind, frost, and birds and sap. The timber and the end frames take all of it, because a bench has no cushions to take it first. Rain & Standing Water Rain lands on the seat and sits in the gaps between the slats. On a bench with a back it also runs down the back and collects where the back meets the seat. Damp, Algae & Mould A slatted seat never really dries out between showers. The gaps hold the damp for days. Green algae starts in the gaps, then spreads across the shaded end of the seat. Sun & Silvering Teak, acacia and oak bleach to silver-grey in the sun, and they dry out as they go. Fine cracks open along the grain. The strip under the arm proves the point: keep the sun off the timber and it keeps its colour. Wind Wind on its own does nothing to a bench; what it carries does. A bench sits low and open on legs, so driving rain, grit and leaf litter get under the seat as well as over it. Once the wind drops, all of it stays in the joints. Frost & Winter Wet timber freezes, and the ice opens the grain into a split that runs the length of a slat. On a cast-iron end the same freeze cracks the paint around the bolt joints, and rust gets in behind it. Birds & Sap A bench goes where the view is, and that is often under a tree. Droppings dry hard onto bare slats and sap sets in the grain. Both mark timber that has lost its finish. Which Bench Do You Have? Which Bench Do You Have? The arms stand proud of the seat, so the cover has to clear them and then drop straight to the ground. No gap under the arm for rain to blow into. Armless Bench A back and no arms, so the seat is the widest point. The cover is a simple run from the top of the back over the seat, with nothing to snag and nothing to lift. Backless Bench A seat on legs and nothing above it. The cover is a shallow box that drops over the seat and pulls in under it. The easiest bench to cover well: nothing above the seat, so nowhere for water to collect. Traditional Park Bench Timber slats on cast or scrolled end frames, with a back that sweeps in a curve. The ends stand proudest, so the cover is shaped to the frames and follows the curve rather than tenting across it. Curved Bench A seat that bows in a crescent, with the back and arms following the same arc. A rectangular cover leaves a triangle of slack at each end; this one is drawn to the arc and sits flush all the way round. What Happens to an Uncovered Outdoor Bench? Split slats, rust and green algae do not only happen to a bench left bare. They happen under covers too — ones that sagged, blew off in the night, or held the damp against the timber. A bench is often the last thing in the garden anyone thinks to cover, and one of the first things the frost reaches.
