This generously proportioned 19th century book cabinet comes from Shanxi Province, China. It retains its original red lacquer and painted decoration, with a beautifully aged surface that has developed considerable character over time. The doors are decorated with arrangements of scholarly or ‘wise objects’, including vases, books, vessels, flowers and other objects traditionally associated with learning and cultured pursuits. A gilt floral border surrounds the painted panels, while the original-style metal fittings complement the rich red lacquer. The double doors open to reveal a large storage space divided by a single shelf.
