Domaine de la Rectorie, l'Oriental 2025

L’Oriental is a unique Collioure red. Grown on the schist soils of the Côte Vermeille, the grapes are hand-harvested at the same ripeness level as those used for Banyuls. However, there is no mutage (fortification) here: fermentation runs to completion, and the wine remains dry. The result is a sun-drenched red that retains great elegance despite its 15% alcohol content. The blend brings together 90% Grenache Noir and 10% Carignan. The Grenache provides generosity and ripe fruit, while the Carignan adds structure and freshness. After destemming, the grapes macerate for 20 days, and the wine is then aged for 11 months in oak demi-muids before bottling. The color is a deep purple. The nose opens with very ripe black fruits, pepper, and spices. On the palate, the substance is ample and concentrated, with a finish of black olive and licorice. A racy wine, to be served at around 16°C. At the table, it pairs well with Southern cuisine: duck breast with figs, lamb tagine with prunes, or beef stew with black olive tapenade.
