Yellow Horned Nerite Snail
Yellow Horned Nerite Snail Yellow Horned Nerite Snail (Clithon diadema), also called the Millennium Snail or Yellow Horn Snail, is a tiny nerite with a golden-yellow shell banded in dark stripes and crowned with short horn-like spines. A naturally variable species from freshwater and brackish streams on Pacific islands, the yellow form is one of the brightest and most decorative of the horned nerites. At under an inch, it is a favorite in nano tanks and aquascapes where larger snails would look out of scale. ⚠ Copper Warning: Like all invertebrates, this snail is extremely sensitive to copper. Never use copper-based medications, algaecides, or plant fertilizers containing copper in its tank, and check that tap-water conditioners and plumbing are copper-free. Horned nerites are tireless grazers on soft algae, diatoms, and biofilm, cleaning glass, rock, and the surfaces of slow-growing plants like Anubias and Bucephalandra without damaging the leaves. They are completely peaceful and safe with fish, shrimp, and plants. Nerites lay small, hard, white eggs on hardscape and glass. These eggs will not hatch in freshwater — the larvae need brackish or saltwater — so the snails will never overpopulate your tank. Soft, acidic water and high CO2 can weaken the shell over time. Keep pH at 7.0 or above with moderate hardness, avoid overdosing CO2, and add calcium if your water is soft. Feeding & Care Tip: In most planted tanks they find plenty of algae and biofilm. If algae runs low, supplement with Hikari Mini Algae Wafers or blanched zucchini, spinach, or green leaf lettuce. Offer Glasgarten Mineral Junkie Treats or Glasgarten Mineral Treats to keep the shell and spines strong.
