Introducing the Pro481 Nizo Super 8 Camera Made in Germany by Braun Nizo, the Nizo 481 combines precision engineering, an elegant compact design, and an impressive collection of professional filmmaking features. The camera is equipped with a premium Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon lens, automatic and manual exposure control, multiple filming speeds, a variable shutter, time-exposure capabilities, interval filming, and automatic fades. It is an excellent choice for filmmakers who want a beautifully designed Super 8 camera with advanced creative control. The Lens The Nizo 481 features a Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon 8–48mm f/1.8 zoom lens. This sharp, high-quality 6x zoom lens provides a versatile range for wide shots, portraits, travel filmmaking, and telephoto compositions. Its fast f/1.8 maximum aperture helps produce brighter viewfinder images and allows filmmakers to work in a wider variety of lighting conditions. The lens can be zoomed manually or electronically at two different speeds, allowing for smooth, controlled zoom effects while filming. The lens accepts 49mm filters and accessories. A Precision Instrument Remove the outer covers of a classic Nizo Super 8 camera and you discover something remarkable: a substantial aluminum chassis, precision-machined mounting surfaces, and an intricate mechanical assembly engineered to exacting tolerances. Unlike cameras that rely heavily on molded plastic structures, the Nizo was built around a rigid metal foundation designed to maintain the precise alignment of its optical and film transport systems. This is German camera engineering from an era when cameras were built to last. The Variable Shutter System Unlike many Super 8 cameras with a fixed shutter, the Nizo 481 features a variable shutter that can be adjusted from fully open to closed. Reducing the shutter opening creates a shorter exposure time, which can produce sharper individual frames and allow the filmmaker to use faster film stocks in brighter lighting conditions. The variable shutter also supports smooth fade-ins and fade-outs directly in the camera. Automatic Fades and Lap Dissolves The Nizo 481 can create professional-looking fade-ins and fade-outs without requiring post-production. It also offers an automatic lap-dissolve feature. By rewinding a short section of film and gradually transitioning between two exposures, the camera can create a classic in-camera dissolve from one scene into the next. Time Exposure and Interval Filming One of the Nizo 481’s most distinctive features is its ability to create extended time exposures and interval photography. The interval timer can capture frames at controlled intervals, making it possible to create time-lapse sequences of sunsets, moving clouds, city lights, flowers opening, construction projects, and other slowly changing subjects. The camera’s time-exposure system can automatically keep the shutter open longer when filming in very low-light conditions, opening creative possibilities that are not available on most Super 8 cameras. Single-Frame Animation Single-frame operation allows the filmmaker to expose one frame at a time for stop-motion animation, titles, special effects, and other experimental filmmaking techniques. The camera includes both electronic remote and traditional cable-release connections, making it easier to operate the camera without disturbing its position during animation or time-lapse photography. Flash and Synchronization Connection The Nizo 481 includes a synchronized flash connection for single-frame photography. The connection can also generate a pulse from the camera transport for compatible external equipment. When the camera was originally introduced, this feature could be used with specialized double-system sound-recording equipment. Manual and Automatic Exposure The Nizo 481 offers both automatic and manual exposure control. In automatic mode, the camera reads the film-speed notch on the Super 8 cartridge and adjusts the aperture as lighting conditions change. Manual exposure allows experienced filmmakers to take direct control of the aperture for consistent exposures and creative effects. A backlight-compensation control provides an additional one stop of exposure when the subject is positioned in front of a bright background. Because modern Super 8 film stocks may exceed the camera’s original automatic metering range, manual exposure may be recommended with certain films. The Pro8mm team can help you select the best film stock and exposure settings for your project. Built-In 85 Filter The Nizo 481 includes a built-in 85 conversion filter for filming daylight scenes with tungsten-balanced film. The filter can be engaged or removed depending on the film stock and lighting conditions. When using modern daylight-balanced film, the filter should remain out of the optical path. Rear-Loading Design The rear-loading film compartment makes loading the Super 8 cartridge quick and straightforward. The cartridge fits securely into the camera body, and the footage counter automatically resets when the film-compartment door is opened. Film Speeds The Nizo 481 offers: 6 frames per second 18 frames per second 24 frames per second 54 frames per second Single-frame operation Interval filming Automatic time exposure The 54 fps setting produces smooth slow-motion footage when projected or transferred at 18 or 24 fps. Power Source The camera motor is powered by six AA batteries. The original exposure system was designed to use two additional 1.35-volt button-cell batteries. The metering and power systems are carefully inspected and tested by Pro8mm as part of the camera’s restoration. Why Buy a Pro8mm Camera? Unlike most vintage cameras sold online “as is,” Pro8mm cameras are inspected, serviced, and film-tested by our in-house technicians, who have decades of experience working with Super 8 equipment. Every Pro8mm camera begins as an original vintage model and is carefully restored to provide the best possible performance. The camera’s transport, exposure system, lens, viewfinder, electrical components, and filming functions are evaluated before it is approved for sale. These cameras are more than 50 years old, and their long-term performance depends heavily on their condition, maintenance, and previous handling. Purchasing from Pro8mm gives you the confidence of buying from a company that specializes exclusively in Super 8 film, cameras, processing, and scanning. Warranty All Pro8mm cameras are fully film-tested and backed by a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty, excluding impact damage, water damage, and damage caused by improper handling. Extend your coverage to a full two years by purchasing our optional extended warranty.
