The days grow longer, the primroses emerge and the first butterflies appear. In the case of my painting Hare and Brimstone, it's a sulphur yellow brimstone. Hares seem to embody all the energy and excitement of the new season. They have long been associated with spring and new beginnings - and they become lively! Congregating in groups, racing across fields, and boxing as the Mrs Hares fend off eager suitors. Whimsical wildlife art with personality Hare and Brimstone shows a brown hare pausing at a clump of primroses as a brimstone butterfly emerges. In this painting, I wanted to capture something of the hare’s distinctive character with its massive ears and bright amber eyes. My folk-art inspired approach brings together expressive shapes, decorative details and a sense of storytelling, creating an image that feels at home in the fresh, hopeful mood of spring.
