Victorian Mappin Brothers Cased Silver-Plated & Gilt Shell-Form Serving Set, circa 1890

A handsome late Victorian five-piece serving set by Mappin Brothers of London and Sheffield, presented in its original fitted case and dating to the late 19th century. The set is beautifully designed with deeply modelled shell-form bowls, each with raised fluting and scrolling detail, the interiors retaining an attractive gilt finish. The elegant handles are richly decorated with foliate and feather-like ornament, giving the set the refined appearance associated with high-quality Victorian tableware. One of the smaller serving pieces is pierced, adding both visual interest and practical variety to the group. The pieces bear a series of period maker’s or trade marks. The original fitted case is particularly attractive, lined in rich blue velvet and satin and gilt-stamped beneath the lid: “By Her Majesty’s Special Warrant Mappin Brothers 66 Cheapside 220 Regent Street London.” The original leather-covered fitted case shows expected wear from age and use, while the blue interior remains quite striking. The survival of the complete fitted presentation case adds considerably to the appeal of the set.
