Raku: Handbuildling and Wheel with Jason Salmon - Monday Nights A six week exploration of form and fire! There is no class on November 23rd. Description: In this class, we'll delve into both handbuilding and wheel throwing as forming techniques, specifically in preparation for two sessions of hands-on raku firing! Originating in 16th century Japan as a process for firing ceremonial tea ware, raku achieves varied, unique surfaces through differing materials and techniques. An exciting, fast paced process of heating, smoking, and cooling works to cultivate interesting, often surprising results. Together we'll learn techniques and create work by handbuilding for our first two weeks. During the third week we'll explore the firing process! The fourth and fifth weeks will focus on wheel throwing and crafting objects to fire in our final class. As kiln space and firing time is limited, not everything we make will be able to be fired. Selecting work that speaks to the process and represents our aesthetics will be a part of our conversation. This class is open to students of all levels with a desire to learn and practice the process of raku and explore and expand ceramic forming skills. Students 16 and older are welcome. Mature preteens must attend with an adult who is also registered for the class. Materials and Supplies: You are welcome to use the studio tools, but you should come with a basic tool kit (this can be purchased at our shop before class. Clay and firings are included in tuition. Open Studio Access: Tuition also covers access to our Open Studio. Open Studio is either held Sundays 10am-4pm or Wednesdays 11am-3pm. Students may choose 1 session per week to practice what you are learning in class. Cancelation Policy: If you need to cancel due to any reason, Wildling needs two full weeks before the class start date for you to receive credit towards another class and 4 weeks to receive a full refund. This class is subject to cancellation if signups are below our 4-person minimum. In this case you will be notified at least 3 days before the class is set to begin. Wildling Collaborative Arts is an Artists Collective in Eugene OR founded in 2023. We offer a membership ceramics studio which is the only 24/7 ceramics studio in Eugene. Wildling was found by local Eugene Artists with the intention of creating a community space that is accessible and inclusive. Wildling provides a living wage to all of their employees, giving local artist a dependable salary so they can support their families and the local economy. We host workshops and classes in our large classroom space as well as offer private studios for local small businesses in Eugene. We are active in the Whitaker community and participate in the Whitaker Last Friday Art Walk. Wildling Collaborative Arts is an accessible and inclusive space.
