HMS Exeter D89 Type 42 Destroyer 1 October 1987 Starboard Side Photo Print

HMS Exeter (D89), a Royal Navy Type 42 destroyer, steams through a deep blue, wind-flecked sea in the Gulf of Oman on 1 October 1987. She is seen close to on her starboard beam, with “D89” painted large near her bow and her bow wave breaking white. Her 4.5-inch gun is on the forecastle, and her two white radar domes stand fore and aft. Behind the bridge rises a large radar aerial with the White Ensign flying above it. Her Lynx helicopter sits on the flight deck at the stern, a few of her crew are gathered aft, and another ship lies far off on the hazy horizon. Exeter was the fifth Royal Navy ship to carry the name of the Devon city. She was launched at Swan Hunter on the Tyne on 25 April 1978 by Lady Joan Mulley and commissioned on 19 September 1980, with the motto Semper Fidelis, “Always Faithful”. Her best-known predecessor was the Second World War heavy cruiser HMS Exeter, which fought at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939, so the name already carried a proud record when this ship was sent to the Falklands in 1982.
