Mal Waldron - Stardust & Starlight: Live At The Jazz Showcase

Mal Waldron is in a focused, late-period mode on this album, which he laid down in August 1979 at Jazz Showcase. The famously brooding American jazz pianist and composer's lines are spare and percussive while circling motifs with subtle rhythmic shifts as Steve Rodby and Wilbur Campbell maintain a restrained, responsive pulse. Two appearances from Sonny Stitt bring some sharper phrasing and faster harmonic turns, and, importantly, the recording preserves room detail and dynamic range with Waldron's left-hand figures grounding extended passages.
