The Kamado Joe Big Joe Konnected Joe puts digital fire control into the 61 cm Big Joe, the largest kamado in the Kamado Joe range. You get 0.29 m² of cooking space, roughly 80% more than a 46 cm Classic-size grill, with a heating element that lights the charcoal for you and a fan that holds your set temperature through the cook. That combination is aimed at big cooks that run long: a full packer brisket, several pork shoulders for a party, or racks of ribs for a crowd, where keeping a large ceramic grill steady for 12 hours or more is the hard part. Set the temperature on the grill or in the Kamado Joe app and the fan does the vent work. When you want to run it by hand, switch to Classic mode. It then behaves like a standard Big Joe, with the Kontrol Tower top vent and bottom vent setting the temperature, so you can still sear hot and cook without power. How the Big Joe Konnected Joe Digital Kamado Works Three parts do the work, from lighting the fire to holding the temperature. Automatic Fire Starter (AFS) A heating element sits in the base of the firebox under the charcoal. One press of the AFS button switches it on for up to 15 minutes, and it shuts off by itself once the grill passes 54°C. No chimney, torch or firelighters needed, though you can still use one or two firelighters in Classic mode. Kontrol Board The control panel sits above the ash drawer on the front of the grill. From it you power the system on, set the pit temperature, set meat probe targets, run a countdown or count-up timer and view a temperature graph of the cook. If the lid is opened, the fan pauses so it isn't stoking an open fire. Kontrol Fan In Automatic mode the bottom vent stays fully closed and the fan supplies all the air. It runs until the pit hits your set temperature, stops, then starts again as the temperature dips. On a 61 cm ceramic grill holding a lot of thermal mass, that steady on-off airflow is what keeps an overnight cook level. Cook Modes Mode How it runs Use it for Automatic Bottom vent closed, top vent set as shown on the Kontrol Board, fan holds the temperature Brisket, pork shoulder, ribs and overnight cooks Classic Fan off; top and bottom vents control the fire Hot searing, traditional kamado cooking, cooking without power Accessory Choose an accessory on the Kontrol Board the first time you open the lid after powering on Lid-open accessories and a full-surface griddle (sold separately) The big ceramic body takes time to heat through: allow 20 to 40 minutes for the temperature to settle before the food goes on, in either mode. Keep the lid closed as much as possible in Automatic mode so the fan isn't chasing heat loss. App and Temperature Monitoring The free Kamado Joe app (Apple App Store and Google Play) pairs with the grill over Bluetooth and WiFi. From your phone you can set and change the temperature and timers, watch the meat probes and follow recipes. If the connection drops, the grill keeps running the cook you set, and everything can still be done from the Kontrol Board. The Kontrol Board reads up to 3 meat probes and one is included, so add probes if you're cooking a brisket and a pork shoulder side by side. The grill only connects to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network; if your router uses one name for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, give the 2.4 GHz band its own name before pairing. Direct and Indirect Cooking The 2-tier Divide & Conquer flexible cooking rack holds two half-moon stainless steel grates and two half-moon ceramic heat deflectors at different heights. On a 61 cm grill each half is large enough to cook a full meal on its own. Fully indirect: both deflectors in for smoking and low-and-slow Two-zone: one deflector in, one side open, so a pork belly roasts on one side while sausages and steaks cook direct on the other Fully direct: deflectors out and grates over the coals for steaks, lamb chops and skewers Two levels: grates on different tiers to fit more food in one cook Use the heat deflectors for cooks below 205°C, and take them out for anything hotter. Capacity The 61 cm grate gives 0.29 m² of cooking space, against 0.16 m² on the Classic-size Kamado Joe Konnected Joe. That's the size to choose if you regularly cook for a crowd, want a whole packer brisket to lie flat, or like to fill the grill with ribs, wings and sides in one session. Fuel Use lump charcoal. Large pieces such as Kamado Joe Big Block XL lump charcoal keep air moving through a deep firebox and light well from the AFS element. Add a few smoking wood chunks to the coals for smoke flavour on long cooks. Before each Automatic cook, clear old ash out of the firebox and ash drawer while the grill is cold. Leftover ash is the main reason the element fails to light fresh charcoal. Never use lighter fluid, spirits, petrol or instant-light charcoal. Construction Ceramic dome and base with a 6-piece AMP (Advanced Multi-Panel) ceramic firebox and stainless steel firebox ring Air Lift hinge that takes most of the weight of the large ceramic dome and can be adjusted to suit you Kontrol Tower top vent that keeps its setting as you open and close the dome Dome thermometer as a backup read on pit temperature Slide-out ash drawer and side handles built into the black base Cart with 4 swivel castors (2 locking) and two folding side shelves Power and Setup The digital system plugs into a standard 220–240 V earthed power point and draws 475–590 W. Use an RCD-protected circuit (30 mA). If you need an extension lead, use an earthed, outdoor-rated lead with at least the same electrical rating, and keep the connection dry and off the ground. The grill weighs 155 kg. The cart needs assembling and the grill is lifted into it by the rear and side handles only, never by the hinge, front handle or shelf tabs. Plan on at least two people. It's for outdoor use only, on a level non-combustible surface, with 3 m clearance from walls, overhead structures and anything that can burn. Building it into an outdoor kitchen? The table needs a 42 cm diameter hole under the grill for airflow, non-combustible materials, and access to the rear power switch, Kontrol Board and ash drawer. Kamado Joe's ceramic feet aren't compatible with the Konnected Joe. Cleaning and Care For a clean burn, set up the Divide & Conquer rack in the top position with both deflectors in, then run the grill in Classic mode at around 315°C for 15 to 20 minutes with the dome closed. Brush the grates with a grill brush and the ceramics and deflectors with a soft brush. Flip dirty deflectors for the next cook and the heat burns the residue off. Once or twice a year, lift out the firebox panels and vacuum out all cold ash and debris. Don't use chemical cleaners on the gasket, and never hose the electrical parts. Unplug before cleaning. Let the dome cool completely before covering it. Fine surface lines in the glaze (crazing) are normal for ceramic grills. Every setting is on the Kontrol Board, so the app is optional. It adds remote monitoring and control from your phone. Can I cook on it without power? Yes, in Classic mode. Light the charcoal with firelighters and control the temperature with the vents. The AFS, fan and Kontrol Board need power to work. Should I choose the Big Joe or Classic-size Konnected Joe? Go by how many you cook for. The 46 cm Konnected Joe suits most families; the 61 cm Big Joe suits regular large gatherings and long cooks with lots of meat. The digital features are the same on both. Can it sear as well as smoke? Yes. The range runs from 107°C for smoking up to 371°C. For searing, take the deflectors out and drop the grates low over the coals. Why did my grill show a Startup Time-Out error? The charcoal didn't reach 65°C within 20 minutes. The usual causes are old ash left in the firebox, too little charcoal, the bottom vent set wrong for the mode, or the AFS button not being pressed. Is a cover included? No. A Big Joe size cover is sold separately. Wait until the dome is cool to the touch before covering it. What should I have ready for the first cook? Lump charcoal, a few smoking wood chunks, and a BBQ Blanket meat resting blanket to keep a brisket or pork shoulder warm while it rests.
