HEAVY MACHINERY by god.damn.chan [FLTH-010] Clocking in at 20 tracks, god.damn.chan’s new HEAVY MACHINERY LP lives up to its name, showcasing chan’s masterful production skills, from dark and gritty boom bap minimalism to jazzy laidback heat and everything in-between. On the dark side, NEVERJAM, FILTHY NAVY, RAT SOUP, 1-800-BUY-GUNS, and METAL GEAR SOLID all deliver the dirt with dark loops and drums that hit like a spike bat, and SNAKEPIT delivers the synth-heavy heat that god.damn.chan is known for. My personal fav in this vein comes toward the end of LP, CLAY PIGEONS - give it a listen, it’s just mean AF. On the jazzy tip, KYOTO, ICEBERG LETTUCE SLIM, TY’N’ KNOTS, and MOVING TARGET all bring mellower vibes with SUNDAY GRAVY being my fav here - the piano loop/chop and bounce in the bassline work perfectly to get my head nodding every time. HEAVY MACHINERY goes hardest with it’s four emcee features though, where chan’s instincts as a beat sommelier deliver perfect pairings every time. The mellow synth loop behind SET PIECE matches Kadeem’s matter-of-fact delivery to set off a lyrically dense verse that never lets up. DIRTY DAN’s limping beat, droning bass, and shimmering Hammond/Leslie sample provide the ideal foundation for Fredman (Go Ask Alice EP, FLTH-008) to lace with a smoked-out stream-of-consciousness verse. MOONWALKER’s beat combines minimalist drums, a dark synth filter sweep, and atonal synth plucks to create a dark tension perfect for BLUEHILLBILL’s unhurried style. The mellow effect stands in stark contrast to the violence in the lyrics, an unsettling disconnect that only heightens the street psychosis vibe. The fourth and final feature, THISSTORYNEVERREPEATS, revolves around a chill jazzy piano loop with tight, understated drums underpinned with a heavy bassline. It’s over this backdrop that R.A.P. Ferreira brings the sonosophy with a half-rap, half-poetry critique of our epoch that ramps up to the kind of intensity I haven’t heard since Saul Williams. Do your ears a favor and listen.
