Autumn sunshine illuminates the great circular bank of the Giant’s Ring at Ballynahatty, County Down, while long tree shadows stretch across the surrounding fields. I captured this aerial photograph in September 2026, during my first visit to this remarkable prehistoric monument near Belfast. From above, the enormous enclosure becomes wonderfully clear, with the surviving stones of its passage tomb appearing small within the expanse of sunlit grass. Beyond the ring, fields, hedgerows and wooded slopes extend towards the distant hills beneath a sky of passing clouds. The photograph captures both the scale of the ancient earthwork and its place in the living landscape.
