Provenance 'Sur Aur Taal' brings melody and rhythm into one cropped composition: a long-necked stringed instrument is played above a pair of hand drums. The painting takes Henri Matisse's love of patterned floors and clothing and uses it to frame an Indian musical moment. The performers are shown only in part, through hands, sleeves and folded legs, so that the instruments and the patterned ground become the subject. A seated figure in green and cream holds the rounded body of a stringed instrument, its face decorated with two carved rosettes and its long neck running to the upper right. Below, a figure in blue plays a pair of tabla, with hands on each drum and the striped straps drawn in cream. Beneath them lies a deep green rug printed with red and cream flowers and a rope-like border, set against a vermilion ground. Green, vermilion and cobalt blue are the main notes, with the warm brown of the drums and the cream of the skins. Shapes are flat and outlined with confident, dark strokes, while the rug's pattern is added in small, quick marks. The overlapping hands and diagonal instruments create a lively sense of rhythm across the picture. The contrast of warm browns and cool greens keeps the picture balanced, and every hand and instrument is simplified to a clear, readable shape.
