Melipona is named after a Mexican bee, and its story is a three-century misunderstanding. Louis XIV, taken with vanilla, wanted it grown on Île Bourbon; every attempt failed, because no one in Europe knew that it is the Melipona that pollinates the orchid and makes it bear its pod. Serge De Oliveira, perfumer at Robertet, therefore starts from Bourbon vanilla. Cashmere wood and amber build a woody, suave heart, then amber crystal, musks and vanilla sugar slide into an oriental, ambery and gourmand base.
