Three Piece Kaida Suite by Tim Bates for Pieff, (1970s) UK
An original three piece Kadia suite designed by Tim Bates for Pieff in the 1970s, comprising of a three seater sofa and two matching armchairs. Produced in black leather and chrome, the Kadia range has low, architectural proportions balanced by softly cushioned seating and polished tubular frames. It is a design that feels unmistakably of its period while still sitting comfortably in contemporary interiors. Pieff became known for producing some of Britain’s most forward thinking furniture during the 1960s and 70s, combining high quality materials with a more refined and glamorous approach to modernism. The company worked with mirrored chrome, leather and Pirelli webbing, materials that at the time felt luxurious and modern. Their furniture was sold through retailers including Harrods and Heal’s and became associated with a more polished and sophisticated interpretation of British modern design. This particular set retains its original black leather upholstery which has been professionally cleaned and conditioned and remains sturdy and in very good condition, with only light signs of age and use. The original chrome metalwork has been fully cleaned and restored, bringing back the clarity of the polished frame while preserving the character of the piece. The original Pirelli webbing remains intact beneath the cushions, contributing to the comfort and distinctive suspended seating quality these pieces are known for. Finding individual Kadia pieces is relatively common, but complete suites are becoming increasingly difficult to source. The set creates a cohesive seating arrangement with the comfort and quality associated with Pieff’s original production. About the Designer Tim Bates played a central role in shaping Pieff’s identity during its most successful years. Joining the family business in the mid 1960s, he led the development of a more design led furniture collection which shifted the company away from contract furniture and into high end domestic interiors. His work often explored the contrast between clean geometric chrome structures and softer upholstery, producing furniture that felt both luxurious and restrained. Many of Bates’ designs carried subtle Italian influences, reflecting the glamour and optimism of the period, but maintained a distinctly British sense of proportion. Models including the Kadia, Alpha, Beta and Valentino ranges helped establish Pieff as one of the most recognisable British furniture manufacturers of the 1970s. Today his work has become increasingly appreciated for combining comfort with a lighter, more architectural approach to seating design.
