Pembina, Serviceberry
(Amelanchier alnifolia) Quite ornamental as well as edible, Pembina produces large crops of 1/2 inch diameter fruit. The fruit is tangy to moderately sweet and high in flavor. It is vigorous with an upright growth habit to about 10-12′ tall with about 8 feet of spread and low suckering. Tends to be a little leggy with typical foliage clearance of about 2 feet from the ground. Somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. Cold hardy to USDA Zone 3. Self-fertile – can produce fruit on its own.
