The Gardens of Malmaison : Pink Cerise Smocked Dress

Cut from a smooth, soft candy pink cotton that glows with the warmth of a garden in full sun, this dress blossoms through its vivid multicoloured floral print details alive with cornflowers in blue and violet, pink blooms, white petals and fresh green leaves tumbling together in the most exuberant botanical composition. The Peter Pan collar frames the neckline in this flower pattern, its rounded edges adding freshness and charm. The puffed sleeves are equally trimmed at the cuff in matching floral fabric with joyful precision. At the waist, a generous butterfly bow sash in the same print ties at the back. The hand-smocked bodice flourishes just as vividly as the flowers themselves. The smocking is worked in the colours of the print with tiny pink embroidered daisies scattered across the panel in a pattern as fresh as a wildflower meadow. At Malmaison, she assembled the most extraordinary collection of blooms France had ever seen, filling her gardens with colour so abundant and so varied that painters were commissioned simply to capture it before it passed. Pink upon pink upon pink, in every shade the season could offer could be admired. This dress was gathered from that garden, from that magnificent, joyful, overflowing abundance of bloom.
