Moro ‘Kurab a Kulang’ armour
The Islamic Moro peoples of the southern Philippines are known for their distinctive forms of arms and armour. Their armour was influenced by Spanish soldiers of the 16th and 17th centuries and typically consists of plates combined with sections of brass chainmail. The local term for these armoured vests is ‘kurab-a-kulang’. The plates vary in material, ranging from brass and copper to buffalo horn, and are sometimes further adorned with silver sheet appliqués. The present example is entirely fitted with copper and brass lamellae, which are additionally decorated on the reverse with ‘oni’ motifs. The front is decorated with appliques in brass, two adjustable knobs are fitted to the front to close the shirt. No hooks remain. Note: The mannequin can be part of the sale on request.
