Turquoise Maiden Figure by Sandra Quandelacy
A small turquoise maiden figure with a prominent grayish brown matrix on one side - carved by Sandra Quandelacy. The carving presents two corn maidens on one side and two mothers on the opposite side - all with jet inlaid eyes. The maidens all wear pendants - two are coral, one is lapis and the other is amazonite. The corns rows are nicely incised with a coral and malachite dot inlaid in the corn rows to depict kernels. There is a small cob one edge featuring a purple alunite and malachite bead. Finally there are two jet inlaid dragonflies incised and inlaid between the corn maidens and two star bursts inlaid on one of the lean edges. Maiden carvings remind us of abundance, fertility and the power of feminine energy and the corn maiden is venerated in Zuni for giving up her life for the health of the community.
