Northumberland House - Canaletto

A detailed architectural view of the historic Northumberland House in London, captured by the Venetian master Canaletto during his time in England. This work depicts Northumberland House, the grand London residence of the Dukes of Northumberland, as it appeared during the mid-eighteenth century. Canaletto, the Venetian master of the veduta, produced this view during his extended stay in England between 1746 and 1755. The composition captures the imposing facade of the Jacobean mansion, which once stood at the western end of the Strand near Charing Cross. Canaletto employs his characteristic precision to document the architectural details of the building, including its distinctive towers and the formal arrangement of its windows. To the right, the equestrian statue of Charles I is visible, providing a sense of scale and historical context to the urban scene.
