LEARN-TO Tap & Die (Two day Workshop) [JULY 2026]
This practical two-day workshop introduces jewellers and small-scale metalworkers to the essential skills of cutting internal and external threads using taps and dies. Threaded components are invaluable in jewellery, allowing you to create secure clasps, interchangeable elements, adjustable fittings and refined mechanical details with precision. Across the two days, you will learn how to cut accurate threaded holes and matching threaded studs, with a strong focus on alignment, fit and clean finishing at jewellery scale. We’ll explore different methods of thread cutting, discuss best practice, and develop techniques that ensure reliable, repeatable results. If time allows, there will also be the opportunity to explore a range of riveting techniques, including pivot rivets, tube rivets, flush rivets and domed rivetss, adding another layer of technical skill to your toolkit. With just five participants, the workshop offers close individual guidance in a supportive, focused learning environment designed to build technical confidence. What will I make? During the workshop you will create: – A selection of simple, practical workshop tools using threaded components – Threaded holes and matching studs suitable for jewellery and small-scale metal objects – Practice samples to keep as technical references for future projects – At least one finished, functional threaded tool component that you can reuse in your own workshop – A finished threaded clasp that demonstrates how these techniques can be applied directly to jewellery By the end of the two days, you will not only understand the mechanics of thread cutting, but you’ll leave with tangible, working components — practical pieces you’ve made yourself and can immediately put to use. What will I learn? This workshop will give you both technical understanding and hands-on confidence in: – How to cut accurate internal threads using taps – How to cut external threads using dies – Correct drilling sizes and preparation for clean thread cutting – How to align and support your work for straight, consistent results – Lubrication, tool handling and techniques that prevent breakages – How to troubleshoot common problems such as misalignment, rough threads or binding – How to create threaded components that fit smoothly and reliably You will also learn how to choose and use tap and die sets confidently, including: – The difference between carbon steel and high-speed steel sets – Which sizes are most useful for jewellers and silversmiths – Metric versus imperial threads – Recommended starter sets suitable for jewellery-scale work – Where to purchase reliable, workshop-quality tools We’ll discuss practical applications of tap and die techniques, including: – Making adjustable workshop tools and small clamps – Creating threaded clasps and mechanical jewellery components – Constructing interchangeable elements – Repair work involving damaged threads – Making small-scale threaded fittings for boxes and vessels – Developing repeatable systems in your own making process By understanding both the tools and the applications, you’ll gain a skill that supports technical independence and long-term workshop efficiency. What will happen during the workshop? The workshop combines clear tutor-led demonstrations with guided, hands-on practice throughout. Each new technique will be demonstrated step-by-step before you move to your bench to try it yourself, with individual support at every stage. Exercises are structured progressively, beginning with foundational skills and building towards fully functional threaded components and finished pieces. There will be time to ask questions, troubleshoot real workshop challenges and discuss how these techniques can support your own style of making. Whether you are looking to improve precision, expand your technical range or simply understand your tools better, the environment is supportive and practical. The atmosphere is relaxed but focused, encouraging careful working, good habits and growing confidence. With such a small group, you’ll receive tailored guidance to ensure you leave feeling capable, informed and ready to integrate tap and die techniques into your own workshop practice.
