Venice Lagoon - cyanotype

Title: Venice Lagoon Artist: Liz Nicol Size: 51cm x 53cm Type: Original Unique Print Subject: Countryside Medium: Cyanotype Framed: Yes - Beautiful Hand Finished Gesso Frame Field studies of the Venice Lagoon – is a long term project charting my understanding of the Venice Lagoon, responding to an environment and ecosystem that is complex and under threat. This project evidences the salt marshes known locally as the barene. Early experiments began in 2013 by making cyanotypes prints that were made on location, exposed to the sun and washed in the Lagoon. These were accompanied by black and white photographs viewing the waters edge taken from a small boat. Exhibited Torre Massimiliana in collaboration with jane da Mosto, Nella Veduta, 2016 (in the View)at Serra dei Giardini 2018 and Getting CLOSE notes from the Venice Lagoon, off_gallery Graz, Austria, 2024. “A cyanotype, is a simple and elegant process, involving two chemical compounds: ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. The paper is then dried in the dark and is ready to be placed under a negative (to make a print) or a flat object (to make a photogram) and exposed to the rays of the sun. The only other chemical compound involved is one that is often taken for granted: water. Simply washing the exposed cyanotype brings out the rich blue colour and makes the print permanent.” Sun Gardens - Victorian Photograms by Anna Atkins
