16x16 Square Antique Spanish Rug / 16x16 rug

This hand-knotted 16 x 16 antique Spanish rug is an absolute knockout in shape, size and style. It’s one of those pieces you’re simply drawn to, and it stands apart from almost everything else in the collection. If you’ve ever tried to find a palatial antique rug woven in a true square, you already know, it’s not easy. They’re scarce. And finding one at this scale, with this much presence, makes it even more special. The wool has a loose, flexible handle with coarse knotting and is surprisingly soft to the touch. Honestly, it feels like a massive blankie. It’s heavy and substantial, with scattered wear from the last hundred years and natural dyes that have settled into this wonderful dusty coral-red. The design is quite distinctive. There’s so much open space in the field, punctuated by tiny repeating motifs, while these enormous, almost architectural floral forms reach inward from the corners. Then you get that large central medallion floating in the middle rather than filling up the field. The whole thing has room to breathe. These old Spanish rugs have long been collected in Europe, and you can see why. There’s a graceful European quality to the scrolling vines and florals, but this 1920s piece also has a wonderful kinship with old Turkish Oushaks…the grand scale of the motifs, the spacious field, the softer drawing and that relaxed, substantial wool.
