Tom Mason Blue Sky Garden Jug, 2026
Tom Mason Blue Sky Garden Jug Stoneware, glaze, resin finish Wheel formed and altered Garden series Garden Series is an edition of painted vessels developed through wheel-throwing, glazing and firing. The series explores gestures through the garden as a site of natural forces, built forms and surface traces. Floral forms appear and dissolve across curved surfaces, rendered through glaze, colour and repeated brushwork. Across the vessels, broad fields of sky and garden sit alongside large flowers, smaller fragments of petals, leaves, weathered ornament and wet surfaces. Tom is interested in gardens that have been made and then left alone. Overgrown backyards with cracked and worn concrete, rusted metalwork, painted surfaces, old pots and weathered ornaments. These landscapes in constructed places are what emerge in the unkempt garden shaped by rain, sun, soil, human neglect and use. In the studio Tom will often write glaze notes directly onto the work - starting as records of colour, surface and firing, but later they can read like initials, graffiti or another kind of mark left behind.
