Early Fall Rapini Broccoli Seeds
Early Fall Rapini, also known as Broccoli Raab or Broccoli Rabe, is a fast-growing Italian heirloom that produces tender shoots, leaves, and small bud clusters with a distinctive peppery, mustard-like flavor. Unlike traditional heading broccoli, rapini does not form a large central head. Instead, it produces clusters of small florets on slender stems surrounded by jagged, leafy greens. The entire above-ground portion of the plant is edible, from the leaves and stems to the unopened flower buds, making it an incredibly efficient use of garden space. The flavor is bold and slightly bitter with a pleasant mustard bite that mellows beautifully when sautéed with garlic and olive oil. It is a staple ingredient in Italian cooking and pairs wonderfully with pasta, sausage, and crusty bread. The plants grow quickly to a height of 12 to 22 inches and should be harvested before the buds open into yellow flowers, which is when the flavor is at its peak. Early Fall Rapini thrives in cool weather and is an excellent choice for both spring and fall gardens. It is remarkably cold-tolerant and can germinate in soil temperatures as low as 40°F, making it one of the earliest crops you can get into the ground. For a fall harvest, direct sow seeds in late July or August and enjoy fresh rapini well into the cooler months. Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and keep the area weeded, as competition can slow growth significantly. Our non-GMO seeds are open-pollinated, untreated, and provided in their natural state.
