Loaded with nicotine and other alkaloids, the plant is used as a stimulant by the Australian indigenous population. Its scientific uses are numerous. It is a model organism for studying plant pathology, it rapidly express genes of interest introduced by Agroinfiltration so that the resulting proteins can be studied, and it has been used as a bioreactor to produce important proteins like the COVID-19 antigen for vaccine production.
