This monumental, highly complex painting by Sonali Chitrakar presents a definitive and deeply narrative depiction of traditional Durga Puja iconography, capturing the ten-armed Goddess Durga slaying the shape-shifting buffalo demon, Mahishasura, while surrounded by her divine family as she prepares to journey home. Characterized by its monumental focal figures and bold contours, the composition masterfully handles complex sacred relationships through a vibrant folk lens. Kalighat painting is a traditional art form that originated in the 19th century around the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, Bengal, practiced by the Patua community. It is celebrated for its sweeping, lyrical brushstrokes, bold color fills and a unique blend of mythological themes with satirical commentary on contemporary life. Traditionally executed with water-based pigments on paper, this style is renowned for its rapid, expressive line-work and minimalistic backgrounds that emphasize the volume and dramatic expressions of the central figures. The central core of the composition features the golden-skinned Goddess Durga standing powerfully, her ten arms fanning out with various weapons such as a sword, spear, bow abd arrow, etc., as she plunges her trident into the chest of the green-skinned demon, Mahishasura, who emerges from a decapitated yellow buffalo torso. She is mounted upon her fierce, spotted yellow lion vehicle (vahana), which is shown biting into the demon's arm. Representing the core narrative of the Bengal autumn festival where the goddess returns home, she is accompanied by her daughters and her sons, who flank the central battle scene. To the left is Goddess Lakshmi, associated with abundance and prosperity, with her vahana, the owl, white Saraswati, seated with her swan, is to the right, holding a veena, a symbolic depiction of her as the goddess of knowledge, music and the arts. The bottom corners of the painting show Ganesha, the elephant headed god associated with auspicious new beginnings and believed to be the remover of obstacles with his vahana, mushaka; and Kartikeya, the God of War, with his vahana, the peacock. The upper register of the painting expands into a grand cosmic canopy. Seated at the absolute top center is her husband, Lord Shiva, gazing down upon the scene, accompanied by Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. Flanking the upper celestial arch are other major manifestations of the goddess, including the dark, powerful form of Goddess Kali. Durga is garbed in a magnificent crimson-red sari with dark blue borders, decorated with thousands of fine white star motifs that shimmer against her golden limbs. The entire complex, multi-tiered narrative is enclosed within a magnificent border of hand-drawn yellow and black daisy medallions that perfectly frames this sweeping visual record of the Durga Puja festival. This painting serves as the ultimate celebration of familial homecoming and the victory of cosmic order. Through her masterful orchestration of a crowded, multi-figured divine assembly within a singular vertical frame, Sonali Chitrakar demonstrates the incredible capacity of the Kalighat style to capture extensive theological epics while maintaining an absolute graphic clarity.
