When President Theodore Roosevelt took office, he was highly critical of the artistic quality of U.S. coinage. In 1904, he turned to his friend and renowned American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, asking him to bring greater beauty and artistry to American coins. In 1905, Roosevelt encouraged Saint-Gaudens to create a high-relief design for the Double Eagle. Saint-Gaudens envisioned Liberty moving forward across a mountaintop, carrying a torch and shield a symbol of progress, freedom, and the American spirit. The design was influenced by Saint-Gaudens’ earlier work on the Sherman Monument in New York City, as well as the ancient Greek sculpture Nike of Samothrace (Winged Victory). Silver Statues’ Liberty is inspired by the final Double Eagle design, portraying a powerful female figure representing both Liberty and Victory. She carries a torch symbolizing enlightenment and an olive branch representing peace. She strides across the rocky outcrop of a mountain summit.
