Bidjar · Kurdistan · Hand-Knotted · New Bidjar Accent Rug 63 × 42 cm · All-Over Pattern on Ivory A miniature Bidjar in the smallest of formats — a densely drawn all-over field on ivory, framed by a terracotta floral border. Small enough to hold in two hands, knotted with the density the Kurdish tradition is known for. Provenance and Heritage Bidjar, in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran, gives its name to the densest and most durable hand-knotted rugs in the Persian canon — the pile is beaten down so firmly while the wool is still damp that collectors have long called them the “iron rugs of Persia.” That construction is why even a piece of this size has real weight and body in the hand: it lies flat from the first day and holds its shape without a backing. Design and Construction The ivory field carries a dense all-over lattice of diamonds and serrated rosettes in wine red, aubergine, brown and olive, with small blossoms in lilac, rose and pale green scattered between them — an unusually varied palette for so small a piece. The terracotta main border runs a fine floral vine, framed on both sides by grey-blue guard stripes with a running zigzag, and closed by a dark navy selvedge. Ivory cotton fringes finish both ends. Quality Knotted at approximately 360,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 230 kpsi (knots per square inch), with a low 8 mm pile. That density is what keeps the lattice legible at this scale — at a coarser knot the small rosettes would collapse into blocks of colour. Presence in the Room At 63 × 42 cm (0.26 m²) this is a decorative piece rather than a floor covering: On a table or chest: laid flat as a surface piece, the way small rugs have always been used in Persian households. On the wall: light enough to hang without a batten. A first hand-knotted rug: the least expensive way into genuine Persian work — and a natural gift.
