Stamp sheet “Chornobyl: 40 Years of Pain, Remembrance, and Warning” 2026
In the spring of 1986, the orchards were in bloom, and life went on as usual. On the night of April 26, the fourth reactor at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. That changed everything. We honor the memory of those who died, those who were affected, and their families. We remember their contribution and the price that was paid. And we remind everyone: the nuclear disaster is not just a thing of the past. To mark the 40th anniversary of the accident, Ukrposhta is issuing a postage block titled “Chornobyl: 40 Years of Pain, Memory, and Warning.” The Chornobyl disaster destroyed hundreds of thousands of lives and became one of the catalysts for social change in Ukraine in the late 1980s. Hundreds of thousands of people—firefighters, military personnel, engineers, and civilians—were mobilized to address the aftermath. Many of them worked without fully realizing the danger. For thousands, this proved fatal. The Soviet authorities concealed the scale of the tragedy and held mass events despite the danger. Meanwhile, radiation spread across Ukraine and Europe. Sweden was one of the first countries to detect dangerous radiation levels. Over 100,000 people were evacuated. Residents of Pripyat left their homes, not knowing it would be forever. Today, the risks have not disappeared. Russia uses nuclear infrastructure as a tool of pressure. In 2022, the occupation of the Chornobyl zone caused fires and the release of radioactive dust. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remains at risk due to the presence of military equipment and problems with power supply and cooling. Chornobyl happened once—and its consequences continue. We hope there will be no repeat.
