Antique Zanzibar Chest
An antique Zanzibar chest from nineteenth century Gujarat Province in northern India. Beautifully made from teak and embellished with decorative brass etchings. Originally used for transporting spices, gems or coins around the Arabian Gulf and as dowry chests as a kind of status symbol for the potential bride. A large decorative brass hasp provides the method of locking the chest. Below are three small drawers and inside to the right, a candle box. This stunning antique dowry chest would make a wonderful large storage chest. Could also work as a quirky coffee table or television stand.
