This mark is called KAMON and is the emblem representing the family.
In the old days, only a few people of high status were allowed to have KAMON, but in the Meiji era (1868-1912), ordinary people were allowed to have KAMON. This family crest 家紋 kamon differs from the common family crest known as "kaamon", a Kamon that only women have "女紋 onna-mon". This family crest is based on paulownia( Japanese KIRI ) and is called "五三桐 gosankiri"
