Antique Chinese Song Dynasty Cream Glazed Ceramic Bowl
Here we have a stunning, antique Chinese ceramic bowl, dating back to the Song dynasty (960-1279 AD). Although this bowl may be small it is packed with rich Chinese history and illustrates the major movement in Chinese ceramics. Due to the depletion of timber in China, during the Song dynasty, coal was used instead to fuel the kilns. This altered the iron impurities within the glaze causing a change in colour, from cool-blue to a yellow/cream slip glaze. Its shallow circular build, featuring a wide, flat bottom that rises gently into a flared, upward curving rim, reflects the rise of Neo - Confucianism. This minimalistic style was greatly valued by elite scholars as it resembles jade, the ultimate symbol of moral virtue. A prominent hairline crack/vein extends across the inner well of the bowl, likely caused by age, restored by using a similar method to Japanese Kintsugi. This bowl would compliment any modern home, particularly repurposed as a jewellery bowl.
