TOPPING DX1 II Gaming Headphone DAC/Amp
Kill the competition The Topping DX1 II is a compact desktop DAC and headphone amplifier built for gaming, music, and everyday desktop use, combining low latency USB-C connectivity with the output power and precision needed for modern headsets and headphones. Its four-channel fully-balanced architecture, ultra-low noise floor, and -140dB channel crosstalk help preserve directional cues, imaging accuracy, and positional detail for competitive play, while up to 1000mW x 2 of output power provides headroom for everything from sensitive gaming IEMs to demanding over-ear headphones. UAC1.0 compatibility expands console support, customizable EQ presets and gain settings can be recalled through the included remote, and the compact footprint keeps your gaming desktop clean and uncluttered. ESS DAC architecture with upgraded performance The DX1 II updates the original with ESS’s ES9039Q2M DAC, improving measurable performance across dynamic range, distortion, and signal integrity. Lab measurements show THD+N as low as 0.000056%, SINAD reaching approximately 125dB, SNR up to 128.8dB, and dynamic range extending to 128.8dB. FFT measurements reveal an extremely low noise floor around -160dB with harmonics well controlled below audible thresholds. Four-channel fully-balanced signal path The fully-balanced amplifier design uses four independent channels and separate left/right architecture from DAC stage through output stage. This approach improves channel separation while maintaining greater control across demanding headphone loads. Measured channel crosstalk reaches -140dB at 1kHz through balanced output, helping preserve image placement and stereo precision. Internal balanced topology also contributes to stronger voltage swing and output capability. High output power from a USB-powered design Despite operating through a single USB connection, the DX1 II delivers substantial output capability through both single-ended and balanced outputs. The 4.4mm balanced headphone connection reaches up to 1000mW x 2 at 32Ω and 64Ω, with 230mW x 2 available at 300Ω. XMOS XU-316 platform with high-resolution support The 16-core XMOS XU-316 USB stage supports PCM playback up to 384kHz and DSD256 decoding. Windows compatibility is handled through a custom Thesycon USB implementation while macOS supports driver-free operation. UAC1.0 and UAC2.0 modes are also selectable, expanding compatibility with gaming devices and broader USB sources. Selectable digital filter profiles The DX1 II includes multiple digital filter options that alter ultrasonic roll-off behavior and transient response. Measurements of all seven filter modes show different cutoff characteristics ranging from sharper responses around 22kHz to slower attenuation extending beyond 35kHz. Users can tailor playback behavior based on preference and source material. Compact desktop design with remote operation An included infrared remote provides direct control over gain settings, EQ presets, filter selection, output modes, and custom preset recall. Frequently used settings can be stored and accessed instantly. Despite its compact dimensions, the DX1 II includes a front display and desktop-friendly controls while maintaining a clean footprint suitable for smaller workspaces.
