Chokecherry
About the Chokecherry The Chokecherry is a hardy native shrub found across the prairies, prized for its fragrant spring flowers and dark fruit that makes excellent jelly, syrup and wine. Adaptable to a wide range of soils, it is a classic choice for the shrub row of a shelterbelt and for wildlife plantings. In spring, the Chokecherry is covered with long clusters of white, fragrant flowers that attract pollinators. By late summer they ripen into dark purple cherries enjoyed by birds and wildlife. The foliage turns yellow to red in fall. Chokecherries sucker to form a dense thicket, and pruning out any black knot keeps plants healthy. Check out our free PDF Tree Planting Guide.
