Adelaide Town Hall Silver-plated Prooflike Commemorative
The Adelaide Town Hall is situated on King William Street, and was designed by Edmund Wright and Edward Woods. Opened in an official ceremony in 1866 after three years of construction, the classically styled building was built from Tea Tree Gully freestone and Dry Creek Bluestone. Playing a pivotal role in the city’s growth and history, the iconic building has been an important venue for civic receptions, concerts, public gatherings and meetings. The Town Hall is listed on the Register of National Estate and serves as the seat of the Adelaide City Council, which celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2015. It is also home to the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Not long after Town Hall’s official opening, a campaign began to raise funds for the installation of a pipe organ in the auditorium. A number of concerts over the next decade raised the necessary funds, with the opening concert for the unveiling of the pipe organ being held on October 2nd 1877. The original hydraulic engine was replaced in 1923 and in 1989, the Council replaced the original century-old pipe organ after criticism that it was out of date. The ‘Adelaide Town Hall’ silver commemorative pays homage to the imposing Victorian era building, which is steeped in South Australian history. The design is struck in exquisite detail and individual elements, such as the regal Prince Albert clock tower and brickwork, are intricately crafted, contrasting beautifully against the brilliant mirror finish. The obverse features the official Coat of Arms of the Adelaide City Council.
