Golden Lava Lamp Discosoma Mushroom

Golden Lava Lamp Discosoma Mushroom, Discosoma sp., is a colorful corallimorpharian with a broad fleshy oral disc and a strongly textured surface covered with raised vesicles. This specimen displays a vivid yellow-gold base with numerous rounded yellow-green raised spots outlined in deep burgundy-red, along with a contrasting magenta to burgundy center. The combination of glowing yellow tissue, dark red rings, and rounded raised vesicles creates a distinctive “lava lamp” appearance across the surface. The coloration becomes especially pronounced toward the outer portions of the disc, where the bright golden-yellow base contrasts sharply with the darker central region. Discosoma species contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide much of their nutritional energy. They can also absorb dissolved nutrients and capture fine suspended organic material from the surrounding water. Because external coloration and surface pattern alone are not sufficient for reliable species-level identification within the genus, Discosoma sp. is the most scientifically appropriate designation for this specimen. Care Guide: Scientific Name: Discosoma sp. Care Level: Easy Lighting: Low to Moderate Water Flow: Low to Moderate, indirect flow Placement: Lower to middle areas of the aquarium depending on lighting intensity Temperament: Generally peaceful, but allow room for expansion and spreading Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; may also benefit from fine suspended plankton and organic particles Growth Form: Broad fleshy oral disc that may reproduce and spread across nearby hard surfaces Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef aquarium temperature and salinity. Keep nitrate and phosphate measurable and reasonably stable rather than excessively low. Special Considerations: Avoid strong direct flow, which can prevent full expansion or cause the mushroom to detach from its substrate. Gradually acclimate to stronger lighting. Allow adequate room for the mushroom to expand and potentially reproduce onto neighboring rockwork.
