Myrrh Sampler Sets — Standard & Exotic Get acquainted with the fragrant world of Myrrh through two sampler sets, each featuring three distinct resins. Choose the Standard Set to explore Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), Opoponax (Commiphora guidotti) and Erythraea Myrrh (Commiphora erythraea), or the Exotic Set for Kua Myrrh (Commiphora kua), Holziana Myrrh (Commiphora holziana) and Kataf Myrrh (Commiphora kataf). Experience each resin’s individual character and let your nose introduce you to your favourites. Each set includes 5 g of each resin, for a total of 15 g. I have put together two sampler sets. If you are new to these aromatic resins, the Standard Set offers a lovely introduction. Exotic is a prized collection worth discovering. Both offer an opportunity to meet a new favourite along the way. Myrrh is the aromatic resin produced by trees of the Commiphora genus. Although these resins share a name, their fragrances can be surprisingly different—from rich bitterness and caramel to ocean air, licorice and sweet berries. Explore three different Myrrh types side by side and discover which ones appeal to you. Choose Standard or Exotic from the Sampler Set menu. STANDARD: Myrrha, Guidotti & Erythraea — Where Appreciation Begins Three distinctive Myrrh types: • Commiphora Myrrha — The familiar Myrrh, and the one most of us know. A wonderfully rich, sweet, stimulating bitterness with notes of caramel and earth. Famous since biblical times as medicine, fragrance and incense, and unsurpassed as a heal-all for oral care. • C. Opoponax Guidotti — Known in the West as Opoponax, and locally as Hadi. Sweet, vibrant, edgy and unmistakable, it lends a bright, crisp, fresh top note to perfume and incense blends. Traditionally used in Somali folk medicine for lower back pain and urinary tract issues. • C. Erythraea — Locally called Hagar, and often sold in the West as Opoponax alongside Guidotti, though the two are quite different. Where Guidotti is forthright and bold, Erythraea has a deep, sensuous nature with no corners or sharp edges. It is darker than its sister both visually and aromatically. Its fragrance reminds me of the ocean and of Aphrodite, which is why I call this Myrrh the Goddess resin and Aphrodite’s Myrrh. Locally it is used as incense and to treat skin and fungal infections. EXOTIC: Kua, Holziana & Kataf — A Prized Collection Worth Discovering Three rarer Myrrhs, each with a signature scent of its own: • C. Kua — A rare member of the Myrrh family from the island of Socotra. Burned on the coal it is musky, sweet, sultry, seductive and deep. It is used locally to perfume clothing and the body: a piece the size of a lentil will perfume a room. • C. Holziana — Brisk, uplifting and vibrant, reminding me of ocean breezes that stimulate and invigorate. It strikes the nose immediately, and sets itself apart from the more medicinal, churchy profile of mainstream Myrrh. • C. Kataf — Tart and green, with hints of licorice and desert Artemesia. On the coal its fragrance is a dance of bitter, sweet, fruity and herbaceous notes with subtle highlights of mint and camphor. Myrrh has been a valuable commodity and an integral part of cultures, religions and trade around the world for thousands of years, highly valued for its traditional medicinal, spiritual and aromatic uses, and at times worth its weight in gold. The name is rooted in the ancient word for bitter, Mar, which also gives us Mary and Miriam, meaning the bitterness or salt of the sea. Traditionally, the whole Myrrh family is ruled by the Moon in astrology and is associated with the feminine principle. Myrrh itself has an affinity with Cancer, while the deeper, more mysterious among them are said to resonate with Scorpio.
