This is a Paint Juicy night, so expect big sound, a room that gets braver with every chorus, and a lot of people discovering they are funnier than they remembered. If your usual Saturday at Smithfield is a quiet drink and an early night, consider it cancelled. Lotti Rem sings live for the whole session, which is the difference between a singalong and a playlist somebody left running. Your host talks you through every brushstroke on the mic, so nobody is left staring at a half finished sky wondering what happened. The breaks between layers are built in on purpose, so there is time to get another drink, take the photo, and be ready when the next big one starts. The set leans into the 70s early, all disco and pub singalongs, then swings through the 80s once the room has stopped pretending it is shy. Groups of mates, mums and daughters, workmates who have been threatening to organise something since Christmas, they all end up shouting the same chorus by the third hour. A 6pm Saturday start makes the whole thing easy. Brushes down around 9pm, so you can stay on at the tavern or take the canvas home while the night is still young. Simple for Trinity Beach, Trinity Park, Kewarra Beach and Yorkeys Knob, an easy run down the highway from Palm Cove and Clifton Beach, and a straight shot north for anyone coming out of Cairns city. Everything else on the calendar sits across the rest of Queensland. Tonight's Artwork Lavender Fields Row after row of lavender runs back to a low horizon in violet, deep purple and lilac, lifting to pink and cream where the last of the light lands on the tips. The sky behind it burns apricot into hot pink, with the sun dropping low behind a dark treeline. None of it is drawn with careful outlines. The whole field is built from quick dabs of a loaded brush, which is why it comes together faster than it has any right to and why a heavy hand helps rather than hurts. It is the calmest thing on the canvas and the least calm you will be all night. There are call and response moments and at least three songs you forgot you knew every word to. What time does it finish? Painting starts at 6pm and runs three hours, so brushes are down around 9pm. Do I need painting experience? None at all. Every step is guided from blank canvas to finished piece, and a field of lavender is built from short dabs rather than fiddly detail, so it is far kinder than it looks. Is this good for a hens or birthday group? Ideal. Hens parties and birthdays are the two occasions we see most.
