The third Lake District story in Ransome’s famous 12-volume Swallows and Amazon series, in a Puffin paperback edition. This edition lacks the 1958 note by Ransome on the origin of the stories. In this story Ransome introduces Dick and Dorothea Callum, from London, to the Swallows and Amazons in a winter setting in the Lake District recalling an event in 1929 or 1930 when the lakes froze over and people took to sailing sleds.
