The Lines Know When to Leave A notebook with lines when you write. Without them when you read. iA Vanishing Line Notebook replaces printed lines with subtle watermark lines. On a blank page, they appear clearly enough to guide your hand. As the page fills with darker ink, the lines quietly recede into the background. Your words become easier to read when you return. Built Around Writing and Reading Ruling That Recedes Instead of printing conventional gray lines or using translucent ink, iA creates its ruling through watermarking. It gives you the structure of a ruled page while you write without leaving that same visual structure competing with your words when you return to read. Paper Chosen for the Pen Every page uses Japanese-made Araveal White paper at 81g/m², chosen around how different pens and inks behave across its surface. From everyday writing tools to fountain pens, it balances a comfortable writing feel with controlled ink behavior that helps suppress bleed-through. Bound to Stay Open Hand-bound in Japan using thread-sewn construction, iA opens completely flat from one spread to the next. You can write naturally across the entire spread without holding pages down or fighting against a spine that wants to close. A Decade in the Details The idea took one sentence to explain. It took ten years to get right. iA wanted a notebook with lines while writing and no lines while reading. The studio behind the focused writing app iA Writer approached that physical problem much like a digital one: prototype, test, redesign, repeat. Debossing gave way to watermark ruling. The lines became thicker, then thinner. Some 300 different papers were tested with countless pens before the final combination was chosen. That decade of refinement has since earned iA Notebook three of product design’s highest honors: Red Dot Best of the Best, iF Gold, and IDEA Gold. What looks simple now is everything that survived ten years of saying no. Page by Page, Yours Some notebooks are filled and forgotten. This one is designed for what you might want to return to. At your desk, open it beside the keyboard when an idea needs more room than a screen gives it. Let the page hold the half-formed thought, the sketch in the margin, the words crossed out and rewritten until something starts to make sense. Away from the desk, it catches the things you didn’t sit down intending to write. A thought during a meeting. Something said over coffee. An observation on a trip you don’t want disappearing into another note on your phone. If it feels worth keeping, give it a place on paper. Weeks or months later, turn back to an earlier page and the ruling that first guided your hand is no longer what you notice. You see the idea, the sketch, the few words you needed at the time. The pristine white has given way to your handwriting. The more you put into it, the less it belongs to iA.
