Christmas Cactus Hanging Basket

8” Hanging Basket The Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) is a popular, long-lived tropical houseplant cherished for its cascading, vibrant winter blossoms. Unlike desert cacti, these plants are native to the coastal rainforests of Brazil, meaning they thrive on regular moisture, high humidity, and bright, indirect sunlight. Essential Care Guide Light: Place in bright, indirect sunlight (such as an east- or north-facing window). Avoid direct, harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the pads and turn them red. Watering: Water thoroughly whenever the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Never let the plant sit in stagnant water, as it is highly susceptible to root rot. Soil & Potting: Use a well-draining mixture like a dedicated cactus mix blended with peat moss or perlite. These plants actually prefer being slightly rootbound, so only repot every 3 to 4 years after the blooming season ends. Humidity: They love humidity. If your indoor winter air is dry, place the pot on a pebble tray filled with water to boost moisture around the foliage. How to Force Winter Blooms To trigger a lush, spectacular bloom right in time for the holidays, you must simulate autumn conditions starting about 6 to 8 weeks before your desired bloom time: The Darkness Rule: Provide 12 to 14 hours of continuous, uninterrupted darkness every night. You can achieve this by placing the plant in a closet, a dark room, or covering it with a box from evening until morning. Even minor artificial indoor light at night can prevent budding. Cooler Temperatures: Keep the plant in a cool environment where nighttime temperatures drop to 10–15°C (50–59°F). Rest Water Regime: Slightly reduce watering during this pre-bloom period. Once you see tight flower buds begin to form, you can stop the strict darkness treatment and resume normal watering. Do Not Move: Once buds are established, leave the plant in one fixed location. Shifting it to a new room or exposing it to sudden temperature changes or hot drafts can cause the delicate buds to drop off prematurely
