This new collection by Carrie Fell plays with the many meanings of carried as remembered objects, stories, history, and inheritance. The works weave together the spirit of historic Southwestern Road trips with their subtle nuances of place, memory, and passage. This exhibition imagines the gallery as a place of arrival and exchange. This collection invites collectors to slow down and take notice, to look closely at the overlooked fragments that might otherwise pass quietly by. Through her new series, Carrie Fell transforms fragments of memory, texture, color, and Western vernacular into rare, small-scale compositions that feel intimate, collected, and deeply considered. Their scale creates a different kind of encounter: personal enough to live closely with, yet rich enough to reveal something new over time. In "The Cost Of Progress," the solitary figure and the sign occupy the same space, yet each carries a different history. For many travelers, the motel is welcome: a safe room, a place to rest, a light in the darkness. Yet beside the man on horseback, it also suggests another story, the steady and swift arrival of roads, commerce, settlement, and structures into a landscape already inhabited and culturally held. The motel can be both shelter and symbol. Its sign speaks of hospitality while also carrying the layered history of encroachment. The Native chief carries a tradition older than the sign behind him. His robes hold generations of memory, while the motel speaks in the language of modern travel and passage. Both occupy the landscape. The work rests within that tension.
