A strand of natural lapis lazuli rondelle beads, hand knotted on pale blue silk thread. The deep, ultramarine blue is flecked with fine pyrite — small glints of gold scattered through the stone, a signature of genuine lapis. Lapis lazuli has been mined for thousands of years, most notably from the Sar-e-Sang region of Afghanistan, one of the oldest continuously worked gemstone deposits in the world. It's a metamorphic rock rather than a single mineral, which is part of what gives it that deep, almost midnight-sky blue with its own natural variation from bead to bead.
