Contributions to Education in Letterform 1

Way back in the mid-1970s, under the title “Contributions to Education in Letterform,” a series of publications was planned, in which professionals, educators, and students had the opportunity to express themselves with regard to education in letterforms. This series of publications was meant to establish a means of exchanging and representing ideas, suggestions, points of view, teaching methods, and course programs, as well as exercises and results. The contributions were meant to inform, orient, and lead to discussion in this area of education. It was a nice idea. And this is the first issue, loaded with thoughts by André Gürtler and Jerry Loren Kuyper about the fundamental mechanics of character construction, examining how variations in stroke thickness, proportions, and geometric transformations alter typographic structure.
