Anastasia Designer Rug 5 × 7 ft (205 × 143 cm) Grey Brass Abstract | 16220
Djoharian Design · Anastasia Collection · India Anastasia Designer Rug 205 × 143 cm · Brass and Cream on Grey · Relief Pile An abstract field like oxidised metal on stone — hand-knotted in India in New Zealand merino wool, with the viscose left standing higher to give the drawing physical relief. The Anastasia Collection The Anastasia line is Djoharian Design's abstract programme, hand-knotted in India by workshops we have worked with for years, under fair-trade conditions certified by Label STEP. The designs abandon the carpet grammar of field, border and medallion entirely. What remains is surface: colour that pools, bleeds and corrodes across a quiet ground, closer to a painted or weathered plane than to an ornamental composition. Colour and Composition The ground is a soft, even pearl grey that runs edge to edge without a border. Across it, forms in brass and burnt ochre spread in irregular, vertical drifts — dense and almost molten in places, elsewhere thinning into scattered specks, as though metal had oxidised across stone and eaten into it. Around those forms sits a second layer in cream and pale ivory, which softens the edges and keeps the gold from reading as hard-edged graphic shapes. Beneath both lies a shadow drawing in slate and steel grey, which gives the composition its depth. Set into it, sparingly: patches of soft olive green and, at a few points, a barely-there lilac. Neither is a highlight; both are quiet counterweights to the warmth of the brass. The Relief Surface The distinguishing feature of this rug is not printed or woven — it is cut. The wool ground is sheared to approximately 8 to 10 mm, while the viscose passages are left standing slightly higher, at roughly 12 mm. The pattern therefore has genuine physical relief: the gold and cream forms rise above the grey ground and can be felt with the hand as well as seen. Two things follow from this. The drawing casts its own faint shadow, so it reads far more strongly in raking light than a flat surface would. And the two fibres take light in opposite ways — the merino matte and absorbing, the viscose reflective — so the same rug looks restrained and grey from one direction and luminously gold from the other. Material and Knotting The pile is 85 % wool and 15 % viscose on a cotton foundation, knotted at approximately 100 knots per square inch — around 155,000 knots per square metre. The wool is fine New Zealand merino, which is what gives the surface its soft, dense hand. The rug is finished without fringes, closing flush on all four sides. It is suitable for underfloor heating; on smooth floors an anti-slip underlay is recommended. Presence in the Room At 205 × 143 cm (2.9 m²) this is an accent format rather than a full room-size rug: In front of a sofa: Sits between seating and coffee table with the front legs of the furniture on the pile — the classic placement for this size. Beside or at the foot of a bed: Small enough for one side of a double bed, or laid across the foot end. Study or entrance area: Under a desk and chair, or as the first surface inside a generous entrance hall. Made to Order The Anastasia design is available in custom dimensions on request. The two fibres are sheared to different heights. The wool ground is cut lower, the viscose passages are left standing a little higher, so the pattern sits physically above the ground rather than lying flush with it. Combined with the different way the two fibres reflect light, this makes the drawing shift noticeably as you move around the rug. What does a rug without fringes mean in practice? The warp ends are turned and secured rather than left loose, so the rug closes flush on all four sides. It sits flatter, is easier to place under doors and furniture, and removes the part of a rug most prone to wear and to catching on chair legs and vacuum heads. How should this rug be cleaned? Vacuum regularly at reduced power, without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Viscose is sensitive to moisture, so blot spills immediately with a dry cloth and never rub or soak. For thorough cleaning, professional rug washing only — no dry cleaning and no domestic wet extraction.
