Turbinaria corals, often called scroll or cup corals, are a classic Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral in the reef aquarium hobby. This particular specimen is a vibrant green variety, commonly known as a Toxic Green Turbinaria. It offers a unique growth form that contrasts well with the branching and mounding shapes of other corals. In a home reef, Turbinaria typically grows in a plating or scrolling formation, creating a thin, delicate-looking skeleton that expands outwards from its base. The surface is covered in small, distinct polyps that extend for feeding. This piece has a solid green base colour, and its polyps will likely present as a similar or slightly different shade, adding subtle texture to its surface. For best care, provide moderate lighting in the 100-200 PAR range, as high light can cause bleaching. Water flow should also be moderate and indirect, just enough to prevent detritus from settling on its plate-like surface. Place it in the middle to upper regions of the rockwork, ensuring it has plenty of room to expand. While photosynthetic, it will benefit from occasional spot-feeding. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium around 400-450 ppm and alkalinity between 8-12 dKH. It is a peaceful coral but can produce short sweeper tentacles, so leave a few inches between it and other corals. The unique plating structure of a Turbinaria can create interesting visual layers and overhangs in an aquascape. This can provide shaded areas below for lower-light corals or invertebrates. It is a steady grower under stable conditions and makes a great addition for hobbyists looking to add structural diversity to their reef. This is a WYSIWYG item, so you'll receive the exact specimen pictured.
