1745 – J. E. Grimmel – Lacus Ladoga
Title: “Ладожское озеро / Lacus Ladoga” — with regional titles “Часть Корелии / Pars Kareliae”, “Часть провинции Ингермаландской / Pars Provinciae Ingermanlandiae”, and “Часть провинции Новогородской / Pars Provinciae Novogardiensis” Description: Extremely rare, large format and very detailed bilingual map (Russian and Latin) of Lake Ladoga and its surrounding provinces, published in the celebrated Atlas Russicus — the first national atlas of Russia, produced by the Russian Academy of Sciences under Empress Elizabeth in 1745. This example covers the region stretching from St. Petersburg and the fortress of Schlüsselburg (Шлиссельбург) along the southern shore of Lake Ladoga, through the historical provinces of Karelia, Ingermanland, and Novgorod. The map is richly detailed with hundreds of named villages, rivers, and estates rendered in fine copperplate line work, with the course of the Wolkchov River running through the lower right. A superb baroque cartouche in the lower right corner depicts classical river gods and nymphs reclining on a rocky shore, framing the descriptive title text. Compiled under the direction of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with cartographic work associated with Joseph-Nicolas de L’Isle. This series of regional maps of the St. Petersburg / Lake Ladoga environs was issued in 1745, and was later re-engraved in a competing edition by Seutter in Vienna.
